Action Tutoring is a national education charity committed to reducing the academic attainment gap by supporting pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. As a Volunteer Tutor, you’ll help level the playing field by offering one-to-one or small group support in English or maths, giving young people the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond. In this role, you’ll tutor pupils either in-person or online, using structured resources provided by Action Tutoring. With just an hour a week over the course of a 10–20 week programme, you’ll help a young person build confidence, strengthen their understanding of key subjects, and improve their academic outcomes—an impact that can shape their future opportunities. As a volunteer, you’ll: - Support 1–3 pupils in maths or English, depending on your preference and experience. - Tutor either primary or secondary school-aged children. - Follow structured tutor workbooks that guide each session. - Commit to just one hour per week over a 10–20 week programme. No formal teaching experience is required—just a passion for helping others and an interest in education and social equality. Need to be over 18
We look for volunteers who: ● Have or are studying for a degree (in any subject) ● Have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject they wish to tutor, or a similar subject If your qualifications do not match these requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We take all previous experience into consideration, so please include anything you think might be relevant.
The minimum commitment is an hour a week (not including preparation time) across the course of a term. Programmes run during term-time, usually before, during or after the school day. You can sign up at any time throughout the year. We do not work in schools during the summer holidays. Generally they take place early morning (8am), mid-morning (10am) or mid-afternoon (3pm). We only have Saturday sessions in London.
